About the Salem Land Use Network

What is the Land Use Network?

The Land Use Network (LUN) is an educational group that is made up of representatives from each of Salem's neighborhood associations and other people who are interested in land use issues.

Who can belong to the LUN?

The Land Use Network is not a membership organization. Anyone is welcome to attend our meetings. Meetings are on the last Wednesday of each month in Salem City Hall, room 305. To receive meeting notices please contact Salem Community Services: 588-6261.

A list of neighborhood committees (PDF) is available online.

Is the LUN a recognized organization of the City of Salem?

The LUN is not a separate organization with bylaws or a charter. Each neighborhood association appoints members to be responsible for land use issues in their area. These representatives derive their authority through their own individual organizations. The City recognizes the LUN as a group which provides staff an opportunity to disseminate information to neighbors in an efficient manner and as a place where they can education citizens on citywide issues.

What kind of things does the LUN do?

The purpose of the LUN is educational. Topics for discussion are decided by those who attend the meetings. From time to time we seek the advice of City of Salem staff to give suggestions regarding current topics of interest. The meeting agendas always include an opportunity for anyone to bring a land use case before the group for advice and mutual assistance.

In the past we have had speakers present information on zone code changes; design standards; multifamily housing standards; SMART design for city planning; school siting issues; system development charges; and city ordinances. The LUN is always open to suggestions.

The LUN has sponsored Citizens Academies such as Land Use 101 and mini-conferences. We have created a video for helping people understand the various land use processes.

Does the LUN take positions on issues?

No, the LUN is not a political action group. The LUN urges citizens to be informed and active in city issues. From time to time those in attendance may request that informational materials be sent to neighborhood associations urging that the individual neighborhood boards study the issue and follow up with appropriate actions when they so choose.

Salem Land Use Network meets the last Wednesday of each month in Room 305 of Salem City Hall.
